Allegheny Health Network Wexford Hospital
Combined Cooling Heat & Power Plant

Winner of the Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania Commercial Award for 2021.

The Allegheny Health Network Wexford Hospital (AHN) Combined Cooling Heat & Power System (CCHP) is a state-of-the art microgrid for a state-of-the art hospital. The LLI Engineering designed system produces reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy to keep the lights on and provide a comfortable environment for patients and staff year round.

Fueled by Peoples Natural Gas and assembled by the master builders at PJ Dick Construction, the CCHP system provides up to 2 megawatts (2 MW) of electricity plus hot water, chilled water and steam to meet the needs of the hospital. Energy not being used by the hospital can be sold back to the grid.

“Being able to produce excess generation of energy that you can sell back to the grid is interesting and provides opportunities as well.”

- Dr. Allan Klapper, President of AHN Wexford Hospital.
