Pittsburgh International Airport Microgrid

Winner of the Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania Innovation Award for 2021.

The Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) Microgrid merges the reliability of natural gas with the sustainability of solar energy to create a powerful, yet efficient power solution. Owned and operated by Peoples Natural Gas, the LLI Engineering designed system produces up to 20 Megawatts (MW) of power. At the time of construction by PJ Dick, PIT consumed 14 MW at peak. Excess power produced by the microgrid can then be sold back to market for a profit.
